D.C. Hunger Solutions Testifies in Support of Give SNAP A Raise Legislation
WASHINGTON, April 28, 2022 — D.C. Hunger Solutions today will testify in support of legislation to Give SNAP A Raise Amendment Act. Introduced by Councilmember Christina Henderson, this bill will increase the minimum monthly Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) by
- providing local funding into the SNAP Program
- increasing SNAP benefits to match food expenses under the Low-Cost Food Plan set by the Food and Nutrition Service at USDA
- change the maximum benefit to 15% of the maximum allotment for his or her family, opposed to the current flat rate of $30
This legislation will be a significant step forward in ensuring thousands of D.C. residents have access to healthy food, providing greater flexibility to purchase nutritious food. “The pandemic exacerbated hunger in our city,” said Beverley Wheeler, Director of D.C. Hunger Solutions. “We are grateful that the D.C. Council understands that over 148,000 residents who participate in the SNAP program will greatly benefit from Give SNAP A Raise.”
