Farmer’s markets offer many benefits to residents of the District of Columbia. They provide seasonally fresh, healthy food and nutrition education, but they also help citizens support local farmers and the business that they bring into the city. The markets draw farmers from Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia to sell their fruits, vegetables, and often times breads and meats to the city’s citizens. There are over fifteen markets located in D.C., many which are listed below with their locations and the seasons and hours that they are open.

Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program

The Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program provides a way for low-income residents of D.C. to access fresh fruits and vegetables. The program offers coupons for produce to women and children that participate in the WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program and to seniors who participate in CSFP (Commodity Supplemental Food Program.) In 2004, over 24,000 people had access to these coupons through these two programs. The coupons, totaling $30, and are given out for the summer growing season from May to November and are redeemable at 21 markets in D.C. and nearby Maryland. Participants simply pick up these coupons at their WIC or CSFP office and then exchange them for produce at their chosen farmers’ market. For more information, call the CSFP office at 202-645-5518 or the WIC office at 645-5663.
